THE MONUMENTS OF ROME:THE COLOSSEUM AND ITS UNDERGROUND

The Colosseum, one of the wonders of the modern world

The Colosseum, one or perhaps the most famous monument in the world every year welcomes visitors from all over the world to admire its majesty, indisputably the symbol of Rome in the world , is one of the 7 wonders of the Modern World , as well as a UNESCO heritage site.

The Flavian amphitheater, the Colosseum, is still the oldest and largest amphitheater in the world that dominates the outside city for almost 2000 years and could accommodate up to 50,000 spectators.

It was the place of recreation par excellence of the Ancient World and the most obvious way to talk about the greatness of the emperor to the last of the colonies and provinces. The Colosseum represented that concept of "Roma caput mundi" that has made it the majesty over the centuries and that showed how a city like Rome was the absolute center of the world and anyone should have fear and admiration.

Entering the Colosseum is still today one of the most exciting and evocative experiences to do in Rome for the atmosphere that breathes, which revives the cinematic emotion of being Russel Crowe or "the Gladiator".

The Underground of the Colosseum

For some time, then, the experiential offer of the Colosseum has been enriched by the visit to its underground. It is a complex system of tunnels, with two large corridors that included 80 vertical tunnels leading directly to the arena.

The route is currently completed with a 170-metre walkway, that allows you to visit the arena and the underground part of the Colosseum that has been the subject of a strong restoration investment started in 2018 thanks to a collaboration between the Minister of Culture and the funding of the Tod’s group.

An immersive experience

The underground that represent today a path to relive the magic of the Colosseum, were in fact the beating heart of the whole organizing machine of the shows that took place in the Arena. You can feel the emotion mixed with fear that gladiators perceived before entering the arena, in a continuous trepidation of anguish between life and death. Retracing the corridors, the arches and the passages is definitely a living one of the first examples of "backstage" history.

Crossing the maze that make it up allow you to enrich the visit of the Colosseum and live a "monument in the monument". Tickets for the Colosseum and underground can be purchased online.
